How is it Clicker Training different from other training methods?
Clicker training unlike classical training methods follows the rubric of operant conditioning. A form of conditioning centered on encouraging target pet behavior through a combination of non-verbal and verbal cues, a clicker and a reward system.
The reward system is as important as the clicker to this training method. A reward reinforces the positive behavior or action of the animal. This is how they know that they did great or if the trainer approves their action.
Clicker training also lessens the use of punishments and aversive control but it does not rule out the use of these methods as well since it is also as effective as the reward system. However, we must remember that any form of corrective action must not involve any physical punishment.
The usual way to do punishment in clicker training is by giving the animal a verbal sign that will signal that it will not be rewarded for not performing something.
How To Use Clicker Taining:
1. Because all animal understands the concept of the reward system it is pretty much easy to execute however it does require a lot of patience and even the smallest of act should be rewarded.
2. Remember to breakdown complex tasks into smaller and manageable activities and reward each completed activity.
3. Use the clicker every time the animal successfully met the expected behavior or act. Otherwise, use a neutral deterrent so the animal will be able distinguish between a wrong and an acceptable act and choose target behavior next time.
4. The clicker training method is founded on positive reinforcement that aids the animal to find out which behavior or action gives the best rewards and which doesn’t.
5. When the animal has already gained mastery over a certain task or action, you may now add verbal and non-verbal signals to the instructions.
The clicker training method was also found effective for animals that have been trained using the classical conditioning. This means that dogs that moved from traditional method to home dog training and operant conditioning may still produce some amazing results as long as the trainer is committed to assist the animal especially during the first steps.
